The main character, is Carlos. Carlos is a child who fall in love with his mother's friend. Her name is Mariana and this is an impossible love. One day, Carlitos leave the school and goes to Mariana's house to confesses his love. This cause to many problems to Carlos, mainly with his fathers. They thought that Carlitos could need help for this, so his fathers take him to the psycologist and even with a priest. But Carlitos not only have problems with his fathers, also he had problems with his best friend Jamie that then became his enemy.

 

      The condition of Mexico in that time, make that Carlo's father found a good job, so they become rich and they could live in better conditions. Carlos didn't know of Mariana after many years until he knows that Mariana has died. The novel develops in Mexico City in the 50's, and the topic is not only the love of Carlos, besides that it mention the politic corruption in Mexico, the develop of modern Mexico and the transformation of the society.

 

     The story takes place in Mexico, when they were under the government of Miguel German, by the 50s, during this administration Mexico is experiencing problems of corruption, but it is also the stage where Mexico opens trade and allows entry of foreign products. The society is very elated and surprised, because they were offended in a way easy. The novel shows various feelings, one is sadness and sorrow for the economic conditions of the people of that time as foreign products end up with nationals. Another setback could be due to something that was not so bad people are scandalized like the worst of this world.

One day, Carlos is in the truck to one of his friends from school selling gum, and manages to talk to him and tells him that Mariana died, and Jim went to live with her real dad, Carlos could not believe it and was investigating without results, eventually he and his family are going to live in New York, and studied at a school in Virginia. Colonia Roma disappears completely, school, departments, particularly in tour history.
